Hiring the right person is SO important
Reference checks are annoying, time-consuming and awkward but they’re so very important when it comes to finding a great employee.
It’s important to check whether your potential recruit has the experience reflected in their CV. You should ask them to provide 3 referees you can call to talk openly and honestly about the applicant’s suitability for a role and team fit.
Remember that it’s not just the questions you ask, but how the answers are delivered. Delays, long pauses, hesitancy, not wanting to give an answer may all reflect that the referee isn’t particularly favourable towards the candidate. WARNING! WARNING!

LinkedIn is actually a true gem, especially in a small town like Wellington. If you haven’t come across the candidate already, chances are you know someone who has. Oh look at that, LinkedIn lets you go underground (this isn’t a substitute for reference checking, FYI).
Of course, when hiring and the reference checks have been done and come up rosy, it’s important to remember that nobody is perfect. You’re never going to be able to find someone who fits your job description 100% and has the personality to boot. Be realistic. They say that if you find someone who fits 80% of the time, you’ve got a winner. Help them strive!
